CHAPTER NINETEEN
Lyssa jumped backward, narrowly avoiding being pinned by the huge piece of the collapsing roof. The apartment groaned. More chunks of the roof fell in, and cracks ran up the wall.
She ran, driven by pure instinct. When she hit the bedroom she blinked, not understanding what she was seeing. Sheâd assumed an earth or shaking essence was being used to create a localized earthquake. That remained a possibility, but she doubted any Sorcerer could target it to affect a single room in a second-floor apartment.
Her safety didnât last. The bedroom rattled and rocked. Ruptures cracked the walls and roof. An explosion blew through her wall and knocked her back, burying her under a pile of wood and drywall. Her head smacked a chunk of her dresser hard.
That wouldnât have been as bad if the rest of the roof hadnât collapsed right after that. The disaster showered heavy clay tiles and wood on her.
Something crunched loudly. She was pretty sure it was her bones.
Lyssaâs body was on fire. Her eyes were open, but she couldnât see anything because of the huge pile of rubble crushing her like a witch being interrogated in Salem.
âLyssa, stay awake,â Jofi called. âIf you donât free yourself, you will die.â
âIâm awake,â she replied. âIâm just in a lot of pain. You know, just the average weekday, now that Iâm back in America. Iâll never bitch about kabuki again.â
Lyssa groaned. Her back and head ached. If she hadnât been wearing regalia, her skull would have caved in and half her bones would have shattered. The explosions had knocked her into the perfect position to be buried. There was no damned way that was a coincidence.
The floor groaned under the weight of the downed roof. If she didnât hurry, sheâd fall and end up dealing with the debris again. Sheâd underestimated the rogue, and she was paying with her pain.
Her momentary flash of worry for anyone else vanished with her memory of Theodoraâs explanation about the normal use of the building. It was the middle of the day. She was the only one there.
All she needed to do was concentrate on taking care of herself. Step one, escape the rubble pile. Step two, chase down the hooded rogue and knock out some teeth before finding out all of Nektariosâ dirty little local secrets.
âAre you able to push yourself out?â Jofi asked.
âNot with all this garbage on me.â Lyssa hissed in pain. âBut donât worry. Iâve got an idea. Itâs time for something stupid.â
âIâd prefer a solution that wasnât stupid,â Jofi replied. âThough any successful idea is most welcome. Iâd rather not learn the habits of a new partner or be released to wander in an unsatisfied way.â
âIâll try to keep my death from inconveniencing you.â
Lyssa ignored the pain suffusing her body and initiated a complicated rhythmic Phrygian chant, combined with careful focus on mental glyphs. She interlocked them and twisted them together, reaching for the power from her very soul.
Pulling off her intended spell was difficult when she wasnât injured.
